Chapter 6 Kindness
Chapter 6 Kindness
The cell door was unlocked.
Since the prisoners had all escaped, there was naturally no need to lock the door.
Yun Luobai reached out and pulled open the gate in front of him. After entering the cell, he stepped on the thatched ground and looked up at the small square window above, lost in thought.
Yunping followed him in, and the father and son looked up at the small window together.
It's designed for ventilation, and its length and width are well controlled.
Even if this small window were placed at the top, or even in the middle of the wall, and even if a prisoner used a knife to saw through the wooden strips above, it would be impossible for them to crawl through and escape. It would be impossible even for a relatively petite woman.
The cell was relatively simply furnished. In addition to a large amount of thatch piled up in the corner, there was a set of square tables and benches commonly found in inns. If a prisoner's family member came to visit with some food and drink, there would be a place to set out the dishes and eat.
The tattered quilt that Yunping kindly brought for the female thief was still neatly folded and placed in a corner, unused.
Yun Luobai squatted down and examined the wall, but found no trace of a tunnel being dug through.
He was imprisoned one day and disappeared without a trace the next. Even if he had dug a tunnel to escape, it would have been impossible for him to do so so quickly.
Yunping sighed deeply, his face filled with resentment.
"I've already checked everything, there's nothing unusual. The cell door shows no signs of forced entry, and the walls and floor are intact. How could a perfectly healthy person just vanish into thin air?"
Yun Luobai stood up and reached out to drag the square table in the cell until it was positioned directly below the small window.
Yunping offered a helping hand, but he didn't understand what Yun Luobai was thinking.
That narrow little window was only for ventilation; anyone who saw it would know that the prisoner could not have escaped from there.
Seeing Yun Luobai stagger up the table and stand up, Yun Ping quickly supported his legs from behind.
"Hey, be careful..."
"Dad, it's not that high. Even if you fall, you probably won't get any scrapes. There's a bunch of thatch down there..."
Yun Luobai chuckled as she muttered to herself, but her gaze remained fixed on the small window in front of her.
He reached out and touched the wooden strips on the small window. Each one was very sturdy, showing no signs of being cut and reassembled, nor could it have been disassembled by someone.
The distance between each wooden strip on the small window is about three inches, making it look very neat.
Yun Luobai turned around and jumped off the square table. After pulling the table back to its original position, he patted the dust off his palms.
"Father, you just said there were no signs of forced entry on the cell door. Was the lock on the cell door locked when the prisoner disappeared?"
"Yes, the doors were all locked. The guards only opened them with their keys when they saw the cells were empty during their patrol..."
Upon receiving Yun Ping's affirmative answer, Yun Luobai inadvertently raised an eyebrow.
He walked out of the cell and stood in the middle of the passageway between the two cells, his gaze falling on the cell opposite.
Through the fence, Yun Luobai could see that there were also small ventilation windows of the same style on the upper part of the wall of the opposite cell. However, due to the different direction, the lighting in the opposite cell was not as good as that in the south-facing cell where they had just been, and could even be ignored.
The prison is relatively damp and dark, so more light would reduce the dampness and make it more comfortable to live in.
The cells opposite were not holding prisoners, and the cells side by side were also empty.
"The north-facing cells should be outside the government office, while the south-facing cells face the street. If one wanted to escape, the south-facing cells would indeed have a higher chance of success."
Yun Luobai murmured to himself, a strange smile playing on his lips.
"But there are no signs of digging in the cell..."
"Father, do you believe in ghosts and spirits?"
"Of course I don't believe it."
"Then she must have left this place on her own merit."
"Based on skill? Based on what skill?"
"Father, she shouldn't have been carrying any belongings with her when she was imprisoned here."
"Um."
Yun Luobai glanced sideways at his father beside him, or rather, his gaze drifted downwards and landed on Yun Ping's waist.
Yunping was the jailer. Jailers, like prison guards, were responsible for watching over prisoners. They all carried knives at their waists to prevent prisoner riots and to deal with emergencies.
However, the guards' swords were mostly just for decoration and were rarely used.
Yun Ping noticed Yun Luobai's gaze. He also looked down at the sword hanging at his waist, his expression somewhat puzzled.
"Luo Bai, when did you become interested in weapons like swords?"
Yun Luobai's lips curled slightly, but she did not answer Yun Ping's question.
"I have a rough idea of how she got out of here, but I need to have someone verify it. Most importantly, if she really has that kind of ability, why would she bother coming to this prison? It's really puzzling..."
Yun Luobai sighed, then gave Yun Ping a wink before walking out of the prison.
"Luo Bai, you're done watching? Where are you going now?"
"I'm going to find somewhere to get something to eat; I'm hungry."
"How exactly did that female thief manage to escape from prison without anyone noticing?"
"Father, you are still too kind."
Yun Luobai said this out of the blue, leaving Yun Ping completely bewildered.
When the two returned by the same route, a new batch of prison guards had already been rotated out of the prison.
After another round of pleasantries, Yun Luobai prepared to leave.
Yunping wanted to see Yun Luobai off, as he was the jailer and would have to stay in the prison afterward.
Yun Luobai is now free, with the sky high and the sea wide, free to go wherever he pleases.
Yun Ping led the way, and when he looked back after leaving the prison, Yun Luobai, who should have been following behind him, had disappeared without a trace.
Just as he was filled with doubt, thinking that Yun Luobai had vanished into thin air like the female thief, footsteps came from the corridor, and Yun Luobai returned.
"Luo Bai, where did you go?"
"It's nothing. I went back and spoke a few more words with the guards who had just arrived. I am, after all, your son, and I wanted to make you proud."
Yun Luobai smiled, then waved goodbye to his father beside him and walked alone towards the outside of the yamen.
Watching Yun Luobai's light and graceful figure disappear into the distance, Yun Ping pursed his lips, his expression somewhat solemn, looking as if he were preoccupied with something.
He turned and walked toward the prison, unaware that Yun Luobai also turned around at that moment, watching his figure disappear near the prison door.
The sun was shining brightly, and its warmth made me feel comfortable.
Yun Luobai recalled what Yun Ping had said to the prison guards when he first entered the prison.
"Even if I weren't a jailer, I could still live a comfortable life... So, it's really hard to believe that you're only frowning because you can't bear to part with the meager monthly salary of being a jailer. I think there must be something else you're hiding from me..."
